Like I Haven't Given You Enough Reasons to Be a Feminist

Attention: if you are intimated to date a feminist, you are missing out.

Study finds that feminists have healthier, more stable and more satisfactory in heterosexual relationships.

Admit it, equality turns you on.

60 Is the New 30, But Better

I've been told by my friends that the last birthday to look forward to is my 21st birthday. After that, they say, it is all downhill. Friends tell me stories of spending their 22nd, 25th and 30th birthdays mobbing around and feeling miserable. It's true--our society fears aging. (See previous blog entry about plastic surgery.)

It's women who fear aging the most. We fear our first wrinkle, menopause and the dreaded devalued position in society that comes with age. Yet, a new study indicates that "an end to a woman’s reproductive years allows her to channel her energy and resources into caring for her children and grandchildren, thereby providing her descendants with a survival advantage."

Not only that but "Often, the scientists find, women in their 60s are as strong as women in their 20s. “It’s the women over 40 who are carrying the heavy loads,’’ said Dr. Hawkes."

Maybe one day society will value more women beyond their looks and reproductive capacities.

"Fertility is not a disease."

President Bush appoints birth-control foe to "oversee $283 million in annual grants to provide low-income families and others with contraceptive services, counseling and preventive screenings."

Do you want a case of what happens when low-income women don't have access to contraceptive services? Read this.

When did I become a depreciating asset?

A Craigslist.com posting from a "beautiful" 25-year-old woman searching for man who made $500,000 to marry made national headlines when a man replied: “In economic terms, you are a depreciating asset and I am an earning asset,” he wrote, because “your looks will fade and my money will likely continue into perpetuity.”

Many women today try to combat time and this "depreciating" through plastic surgery. This war on the body isn't new but has been enhanced by technology and the media. Another article last week from the New York Times highlighted plastic surgery post-pregnancy.

In an informational email sent out weekly by my University to all students was an announcement for a facial plastic seminar. During the seminar, a doctor is going to speak about "Preventing and Erasing the Signs of Aging." His focus is going to be on Botox, Restylane, "mini-lift," and the other "minimally invasive techniques now available to re-beautify the face." Was this announcment missing its target audience or does the doctor think I need a "mini-lift" at 22?

A group of college women standing outside my lecture hall the other day were talking about how it wasn't too late to start using anti-aging cream. In the group of four, two had already starting using anti-aging cream.

Maybe I've already started depreciating. I guess I will have to settle for someone who makes less than six figures.
